Homewood Police Department News Release

On March 27th, 2026, Homewood Police Department investigators conducted an operation in the Edgewood area to arrest a known child predator. Chase Andrew Womble, age 41 of Sharpsburg, Georgia, was arrested for Traveling to Meet a Child for an Unlawful Sex Act. He was transferred to Jefferson County Jail where he is being held on a $60,000 bond.

On March 1st, 2026, at approximately 9:25 PM, Homewood Police responded to Brookwood Hospital, located at 2010 Medical Center Drive, on a possible shots fired call. Officers arrived on scene and found a female subject and a male subject, both deceased from gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigation by Homewood Police detectives shows that the incident is an apparent murder-suicide. The area is still active as detectives and crime scene investigators continue to process the scene.

In the last month, the Homewood Police Department has taken multiple reports involving stolen utility trailers from the West Homewood area, specifically on Distribution Drive and West Oxmoor Road. After a comprehensive investigation, Homewood Police detectives were able to identify the suspect as David Gregory Lewis, age 39, of Birmingham. Detectives obtained felony Theft of Property warrants on Lewis for four separate utility trailer thefts in Homewood. Lewis was located by officers and arrested on February 19th. Lewis was transferred to Jefferson County Jail with the following charges and bonds.

Theft of Property – 1st Degree, three counts ($90,000 total bond)

Theft of Property – 2nd Degree, one count ($15,000 bond)

Drug Trafficking Suspects Arrested

On December 19th, 2025, members of the Homewood Police Tactical Team, Special Investigations Unit, K9 Unit, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms executed a search warrant in the 1500 block of Warrior Road in Birmingham from a narcotics case which originated in Homewood. During the execution of the search warrant, Jessica Yvonne Moore (age 39) and Destiney Renee Jones (age 35), both from Birmingham, were detained.

Officers recovered 28 pounds of methamphetamine, $13,000 in cash, and four firearms, one of which was stolen. Both Moore and Jones were subsequently arrested and charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Moore was additionally charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance. They were transferred to Jefferson County Jail with the following bonds:

• Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance $10,000 bond

• Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia $3,000 bond

Walmart Arson Investigation

On December 30th at approximately 10:05 AM, Homewood Police and Fire Departments responded to Walmart, located at 209 Lakeshore Parkway in Homewood, on a fire call. A fire in the home goods section of the store was extinguished by Homewood Fire Department personnel. The store was safely evacuated and there were no injuries, however there was extensive damage inside the store. During the investigation, it became apparent that the fire was intentionally set by several suspects, which left the scene before police arrival. Homewood Police Department detectives and crime scene investigators are processing the scene and investigating the incident as arson.

Shooting Suspect Arrested

On November 1st, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM, Homewood Police Department responded to a call of multiple shots fired in the 100 block of Vulcan Road. Officers quickly arrived and detained several subjects. Officers verified that there were no injuries to any of the subjects on scene. After the investigation, Emmanuel Dewayne Furlow, age 23 of Ensley, was arrested and charged with four counts of Attempted Murder ($60,000 bond per count) and two counts of Shooting into an Occupied Building ($30,000 bond per count). Furlow has been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. The investigation is still ongoing, and additional charges could be forthcoming.

Car Burglary Suspect Arrested

On October 23rd, 2025, at approximately 2:30 PM, a Homewood Police officer was patrolling the 100 block of Wildwood Parkway when he noticed a suspect and vehicle matching the description of a car burglary suspect who had recently broken into vehicles in that same area. The Homewood officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect, who immediately began to flee down Lakeshore Parkway.

Multiple Homewood Police vehicles pursed the suspect through Homewood and into southwest Birmingham to the 1500 block of Dennison Avenue SW. The suspect was driving recklessly in traffic and caused a traffic accident between his vehicle, two bystander vehicles, and two police vehicles. The suspect continued driving on Dennison Avenue SW while the Homewood officers stopped to check on the drivers of the other vehicles. The suspect vehicle struck a curb several blocks down on Jefferson Avenue SW, and the suspect abandoned his vehicle in the roadway. The suspect was apprehended after a short foot pursuit.

Medics were called to the scene to check the drivers of the bystander vehicles for injuries. There were no injuries to any Homewood Police officers or the suspect. The suspect, Ronald Boware Woods Sr., age 39 of Birmingham, was arrested and charged with the following felony offenses:

• Attempting to Elude - $30,000 bond

• Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Firearm - $15,000 bond

• Unlawful Breaking and Entering of a Vehicle - $15,000 bond

• Theft of Property 2nd Degree - $10,000 bond

• Receiving Stolen Property 2nd Degree - $10,000 bond

• Illegal Possession of a Credit Card - $10,000 bond

Woods was in possession of multiple stolen items including credit cards, a pistol stolen from Homewood, and a pistol stolen from Bessemer. Woods is suspected of committing thefts in Homewood, Bessemer, Hoover, and other cities in the Birmingham metro area. Woods has been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail on the above listed charged where he will be able to post bond.

Bicycle Theft Suspect Arrested

Bicycle Theft Suspect Arrested

On September 27th, 2025, the Homewood Police Department received a call about an electric bicycle stolen from the 1000 block of Broadway. A Homewood Police officer interviewed the victim and was able to obtain a description of the suspect from video surveillance footage from the condo garage. Later in the afternoon, the same officer observed a subject matching the bike theft suspect description walking in the 10 block of Greensprings Highway. The subject was wearing the same clothing and backpack as seen on the video footage from the theft.

Based on the matching description, the subject was detained as a suspect on the bike theft. The suspect was in possession of a lock pick set, a crowbar, and bolt cutters, all of which are commonly used in the commission of burglary and theft crimes. He was also in possession of drug paraphernalia. After further investigation, officers were able to locate the stolen bicycle and return it to the owner.

The suspect, Jacob King Wheelock, age 28, transient, was arrested and charged with Theft of Property – 1st Degree ($30,000 bond); Possession of Burglary Tools ($15,000 bond); and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia ($6,000 bond). He was transported to Homewood City Jail and then to Jefferson County Jail.

At approximately 8:19 AM, Homewood Police Dispatch received calls of shots fired in the area of Lakeshore Pkwy near I-65. A black male suspect driving a red pickup truck fired multiple shots into another driver's vehicle and then left the area. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured. The suspect fled and there is not believed to be any immediate threat to the public. Officer Involved Shooting Investigation

On September 12th, 2025, at approximately 9:40 AM, Homewood Police Officers observed a male subject on a bicycle obstructing traffic on Greensprings Highway near Valley Avenue. The subject was riding in and out of all four lanes of traffic on Greensprings Highway causing multiple traffic disruptions.

Two officers made contact with the subject in the middle of the road on Greensprings Highway and asked for his identification. The subject stated that he did not want to identify himself because he had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest. The subject also stated that he had been to prison for robbery. Officers continued to speak to the subject, and he eventually identified himself. Officers confirmed that he had four outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrants and was a convicted violent felon, with a conviction for Robbery – 1st Degree.

The two officers attempted to detain the subject pending confirmation of his warrants. Per standard procedure for officer safety, officers asked if had any weapons. The subject became non-compliant and uncooperative, moving himself away from officers and into lanes of oncoming traffic. Officers gave the subject multiple commands to get out of oncoming traffic lanes. The subject continued to refuse to listen to officers and began reaching under his shirt. Officers gave the subject multiple verbal commands to stop reaching, but the subject refused commands and pulled a semi-automatic pistol from his right side. The subject chambered a round into the pistol by pulling the slide to the rear and pointed the weapon at officers, at which point they fired their duty weapons striking the subject. The subject fell to the ground and was secured by officers after they removed the pistol and three loaded magazines from his person.

After the subject was secured, officers immediately began to render first aid. Homewood Fire Department medics responded and provided treatment until the subject was transported to UAB Emergency Room, where he was pronounced deceased. The Alabama Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation. The details surrounding this incident are clearly captured on the officers’ body worn cameras, of which Attorney General’s Office investigators have taken possession. Any further questions should be directed to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.

Public Lewdness Arrest

On September 9th, 2025, at approximately 3:30 PM, the Homewood Police Department received multiple calls about a male exposing himself on Oxmoor Road near the Edgewood Strip. It was reported that this was the same subject that was exposing himself on September 8th in the same area.

Homewood Police officers quickly responded and located the subject. While he was detained for investigative purposes, multiple citizens, who witnessed the lewd acts on both days, approached officers. Officers explained the misdemeanor warrant process to the citizens and several contacted the Homewood Municipal Court magistrate to pursue charges.

The subject, Patrick Lamar Croskey, age 31, of Birmingham was arrested and charged with Public Lewdness and Disorderly Conduct. He was transported to the Homewood City Jail and is currently being held on a $2,000 bond. Additional charges are pending as more citizens who witnessed the incident are expected to come forward and sign warrants.

As yesterday’s public information announcement explained, this arrest is a prime example of the citizens of Homewood partnering with the Homewood Police Department to keep our community safe. We would like to encourage the citizens of Homewood to continue to report any suspected criminal activity to the Homewood Police Department.

The Homewood Police Department would like to take the opportunity to provide clarity on the process of reporting and arresting for misdemeanor crimes. In accordance with the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure, local law enforcement may not arrest individuals for misdemeanor crimes that they did not personally witness, with the exception of Driving Under the Influence, Shoplifting, and Domestic Violence offenses. Per the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure, victims of misdemeanor crimes are required to follow through on prosecution. This includes filing a police report, appearing before a court magistrate to give a sworn statement, and providing proof or evidence in order for an arrest warrant to be issued. We continue to encourage our citizens to report activity which is suspicious or criminal in nature.

Arson Suspect Arrested

Homewood Police Department News Release

Arson Suspect Arrested

On August 22nd, 2025, at approximately 2:30 PM, Homewood Police and Fire Departments responded to Walmart, located at 209 Lakeshore Parkway in Homewood, on a fire call. It was determined that a shopping cart full of items was deliberately set on fire inside the store, forcing the store to evacuate. The store was closed for the remainder of the day, and Walmart reported over $130,000 in damage due to the fire. Homewood Police Department detectives began an arson investigation.

During the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Mercutio Terrell Southall, age 40, of Birmingham. Southall is a known Black Lives Matter activist who was previously arrested and plead guilty to disorderly conduct and resisting arrest during a demonstration in downtown Homewood in 2015. He was also arrested and convicted of possessing a firearm at a demonstration in Montgomery County in 2016.

Verified evidence shows Southall attending the Black Lives Matter mass protest at the Homewood Soccer Park at approximately 11:35 AM on August 22nd. Southall is seen actively engaging and conversing with protesters at the Soccer Park. Southall then leaves the Soccer Park and travels to Walmart on Lakeshore Parkway, where he fills up a shopping cart full of rags, blankets, charcoal bags, small engine fuel, and paint thinner. Southall then pre-positions the shopping cart in a clothing aisle and returns to the mass protest at the Homewood Soccer Park. When the large group leaves the Soccer Park to go to downtown Homewood, Southall is seen driving back to Walmart on Lakeshore Parkway, where he facilitates the ignition of the fire inside the store, causing a mass evacuation.

After Southall was identified by Homewood Police detectives, he was arrested and charged with Arson – 1st Degree and Criminal Mischief – 1st Degree. Southall was transferred to the Jefferson County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond for the Arson – 1st Degree charge due to Aniah’s Law. The Homewood Police Department is working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms on pursuing federal arson charges. The investigation is still ongoing, with detectives considering pursuing charges on additional participants in the future.

Arrests Made in Downtown Homewood

On August 22nd, 2025, at approximately 2:00 PM, the Homewood Police Department began receiving multiple calls from merchants, motorists, and citizens about a large group of disorderly persons obstructing traffic on 18th Street South in downtown Homewood. Officers responded and observed a large group in the roadway obstructing traffic at multiple points on 18th Street South. The Homewood Police Department arrested six individuals for Disorderly Conduct. Three of those six individuals were armed with handguns and were additionally charged with Possessing a Firearm while Participating in a Demonstration. One of the armed individuals was also charged with Resisting Arrest. Three of the arrested individuals were from Louisiana and the other three were from Alabama. Homewood Police officers also towed a vehicle that was used to facilitate the disorderly conduct by obstructing the flow of traffic. All six arrested individuals were transported to Homewood City Jail where they posted bond and were released.

Jefferson County District Attorney Decides Officer Involved Shooting was Justified

The Homewood Police Department has been informed by the Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr that there will be no criminal charges filed against the Homewood police officer involved in the shooting of Jabari Peoples on June 23, 2025. After a review of the facts and circumstances, including the findings of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Carr stated the following, “this shooting is deemed justified”.

The Homewood Police Department has received requests and inquiries regarding the release of the body-worn camera footage to the public. As previously stated, pursuant to the Code of Alabama, Sections 36-21-210 and 212, the Homewood Police Department may not release the body-worn camera footage to the public. The video footage may only be disclosed to or viewed by the following parties, as defined in the below sections of the statute:

Section 36-21-212

Disclosure of Recordings.

(a) Recordings in the custody of a law enforcement agency shall be disclosed to an individual or personal representative only as provided by this article. This article does not apply to the exchange of recordings between law enforcement or prosecuting agencies. An individual requesting disclosure of a recording must make a written request to the head of the custodial law enforcement agency that states the date and approximate time of the activity captured in the recording or otherwise identifies the activity with reasonable particularity sufficient to identify the recording to which the request refers.

(1) An individual whose image or voice is the subject of the recording.

(2) A personal representative of an adult individual whose image or voice is the subject of the recording if the adult individual has consented to the disclosure.

(6) A personal representative of a deceased individual whose image or voice is the subject of the recording.

(d) When disclosing a recording, the custodial law enforcement agency shall disclose only those portions of the recording that are relevant to the individual’s request.

ABC Daycare Shooting Investigation

On July 21st, at approximately 9:20 AM, Homewood Police Department officers responded to a report of gunshots near ABC Daycare, located at 610 Columbiana Road in Homewood.

Officers responded to the scene and verified that there were no injuries. After conducting interviews, they found out the following information. A parent and her sister arrived at the daycare to drop a child off. They got into a verbal argument with an employee which then became physical. The fight was broken up by other employees, at which time the parent, her sister, and the child left the daycare in their vehicle, driving down Carr Avenue towards Greensprings Highway. Witnesses stated that the daycare employee then got into her own vehicle, followed the victims down Carr Avenue, and fired multiple shots at their vehicle with a handgun. There were no injuries to anyone in the victim’s vehicle.

Detectives and crime scene investigators processed the scene and recovered a bullet from a tire on the victim’s vehicle. The daycare employee was arrested pending charges for Attempted Murder.

Officer Involved Shooting Investigation – Additional Details

The Homewood Police Department has seen a recent increase in criminal activity in and around our athletic complexes. On June 23rd, 2025, at around 9:30 PM, a veteran Homewood Police officer observed a vehicle parked in the back corner of the Homewood Soccer Complex parking lot located at 1800 South Lakeshore Drive. The officer approached the vehicle in his marked Homewood Police unit and observed two occupants sitting in the vehicle. As the uniformed officer approached the vehicle, he smelled the odor of marijuana. The officer ordered both occupants out of the vehicle. When the driver (Jabari Peoples) exited the vehicle, the officer observed a handgun in the door pocket of the open driver’s side door. The officer then attempted to secure Mr. Peoples in handcuffs to affect an arrest for Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and possible other charges, at which point Mr. Peoples began to actively resist. A physical struggle ensued, at which point the officer was knocked to the ground. Mr. Peoples broke away from the officer and retrieved the handgun from the open driver’s side door pocket, creating an immediate deadly threat to the officer. The officer, fearing for his safety, fired one round from his service weapon to defend himself, in accordance with Alabama state law (Title 13A-3-27(b2)). Mr. Peoples fell to the ground, still gripping the handgun in his right hand. The officer gave multiple verbal commands for Mr. Peoples to let go of the handgun. The officer then called for emergency backup as the other vehicle occupant, who had fled into the woods, began approaching the officer. The officer instructed the other occupant to sit on the curb while he removed the handgun from Mr. Peoples’ possession. Medics were then requested to respond to the scene.

Backup officers arrived within one minute and thirty-six seconds after the officer’s request for assistance and immediately began rendering medical treatment to Mr. Peoples. While emergency aid was being rendered, the involved officer secured the other occupant in the back of his marked Homewood Police unit. Medical treatment of Mr. Peoples was relinquished to Homewood Fire Department paramedics upon their arrival, and he was transported to UAB Hospital.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was immediately notified, according to the Homewood Police Department’s policy, and responded to the scene where they assumed responsibility for the investigation. The details surrounding this incident are clearly captured on the officer’s body worn camera, of which ALEA took possession. Arrangements are being made to coordinate viewing of the video by Mr. Peoples’ family. As the Homewood Police Department has relinquished the investigation to ALEA, pursuant to Code of Alabama Section 36-21-210 (2), only ALEA is authorized by law to release any recording of the incident.

This sequence of events, resulting in the loss of life, is tragic and we empathize with Mr. Peoples’ family as they grieve.

On November 26th, 2024, Homewood Police officers took a report of a rape which occurred in the 10 block of Aspen Court. Homewood Police detectives interviewed the victim and were able to identify a suspect. Through further investigative work, detectives were able to confirm the suspect’s involvement using DNA evidence. Homewood detectives were able to issue arrest warrants for the suspect; however, he fled the area before he could be taken into custody.

On June 24th, 2024, the Homewood Police Department with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrested Jelani Adom Gooden, age 28 of Salem, Alabama, for the rape that occurred in the 10 block of Aspen Court. He was taken into custody and transported to the Homewood City Jail. Gooden was transferred to the Jefferson County Jail on the below listed charges where he is being held without bond.

The Homewood Police Department has received reports of both children and adults driving golf carts on public roads. We want to remind all residents that traditional golf carts are not street legal under Alabama law and may not be operated on public roadways in Homewood. Children are never permitted to drive golf carts on public streets, under any circumstance.

There is an important difference between golf carts and low-speed vehicles (LSVs).

What Counts as a LEGAL Road Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV) in Alabama?

To qualify as a legal LSV, the vehicle must:

Be registered with your county and display a valid tag
Be insured, just like a standard vehicle
Include required safety features (seatbelts, headlights, mirrors, turn signals, child restraints if needed, etc.)
Be operated by a licensed driver age 16 or older
Only be driven on roads where the posted speed limit is 35 mph or less

Properly registered and insured LSVs that meet these criteria may be driven on public roads in Homewood by licensed drivers.

Homewood Police Department News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 4th, 2025

Accidental Death Investigation

On April 4th, 2025, at approximately 1337 hours, Homewood Police Department dispatch received a 9-1-1 call regarding a possible accident on the I-65 northbound off-ramp at Oxmoor Rd. Officers arrived on scene and found a subject deceased from an accident involving a riding lawnmower.

The deceased subject was an employee of a private landscaping company which was contracted by the City of Homewood to mow the grass on the state right-of-way on I-65 at Oxmoor Rd. After interviewing witnesses, it was determined that the subject was operating a riding lawnmower on a steep embankment on the off-ramp of I-65 northbound at Oxmoor Rd. The subject was attempting to drive the lawnmower up the embankment when it flipped over, resulting in his death.

The subject was pronounced deceased on scene by medics with the Homewood Fire Department. Homewood Police Department Evidence Technicians responded and processed the scene. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office responded and took custody of the deceased. The accident scene is no longer active.

Shooting Investigation

On February 10th, 2025, at approximately 1904 hours, Homewood Police Department dispatch received a 9-1-1 call regarding a traffic accident and possible shots fired on the I-65 northbound on-ramp from Oxmoor.

Officers responded to the scene and verified that there were no injuries. After interviewing the victim, they found out the following information. Two vehicles were involved in a minor traffic accident on Greensprings Highway southbound near West Valley Ave. One vehicle (Suspect Vehicle) put on its hazard lights as if to pull off the roadway to exchange information. The other vehicle (Victim Vehicle) followed the suspect vehicle down Greensprings Highway onto Oxmoor Road to I-65, when a passenger in the suspect vehicle leaned out the window and began shooting at the victim vehicle. The victim vehicle immediately pulled over and the suspect vehicle left on I-65 northbound. There are no suspects in custody.

The victim vehicle was struck multiple times, but the driver/sole occupant was not injured in the incident. Detectives and crime scene investigators responded to investigate the incident and process the scene. The Homewood Police Department is asking for assistance from the public to help identify the suspect(s).
